The Consell Insular de Menorca attends the 1st European Forum of World Heritage Site Managers

alianza alhambraThe Consell Insular de Menorca has participated in the extraordinary general assembly held in the Alhambra in Granada within the framework of the 1st European Forum of World Heritage Site Managers. Representing the Consell Insular was the vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Cooperation of the Consell Insular de Menorca, Simón Gornés.

The monumental complex of the Alhambra brought together more than 70 European managers for three days in Granada to analyse the future challenges in terms of conservation and dissemination faced by the assets recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

The forum was organised by the Alianza de Paisajes Culturales y Sitios de Patrimonio Mundial Afines, an association of world heritage sites in Spain, Portugal and Andorra. In addition to European managers, up to ten observers from other countries participated, including representatives from the United States, Canada and several Latin American countries. As one of the 13 members of this institution, vice-president Simón Gornés has contributed to the approval by consensus of the re-election of Llorenç Galmés, president of the Consell Insular de Mallorca, as president of the Alianza, as well as nine members of the board of directors, such as Rodrigo Ruiz-Jiménez, director of the Patronato; Miguel Goméz, mayor of Aranjuez; and Inés Rey, mayor of La Coruña.

Currently, a total of 12 Spanish sites and one Portuguese site form part of this Alianza, with a total of 50 sites and monuments declared World Heritage by Unesco. Talayotic Menorca has been a member of this entity since 2024.

The participation of the Consell Insular de Menorca in this meeting reaffirms its commitment to the preservation and promotion of the island's cultural heritage, as well as its involvement in collective initiatives that seek to strengthen collaboration between World Heritage sites.
