Talayotic Menorca Showcases Its Heritage at Tarraco Viva

Sling-making workshops, historical reenactments, a documentary screening and a book presentation featured in this year’s programme of activities

Talayotic Menorca once again took part in Tarraco Viva, one of Spain’s leading festivals dedicated to historical reenactment and heritage outreach, held in Tarragona on 23 and 24 May. The Menorcan delegation presented a programme focused on promoting Talayotic heritage through activities for all audiences, which were met with an enthusiastic response from festivalgoers.

Among the highlights were two sling-making workshops held at Camp de Mart, both of which were fully booked before the festival even began. Led by Lluís Pons Livermore, the sessions introduced participants to the history of the sling as an iconic element of Balearic culture, while also giving them the opportunity to make their own sling and practise basic throwing techniques.

The programme also featured the historical reenactment “Funditores Baleares”, staged at the Camp de Mart Auditorium before audiences of more than 1,000 people across three sessions. Archaeologist Borja Corral explored the role of the ancient Balearic slingers and key aspects of Talayotic society through scenes from daily life performed by historical reenactors. The event concluded with a live sling demonstration by five members of the Honderos de Menorca, dressed in costumes inspired by the Talayotic period.
Another activity included the screening of the second episode of the documentary miniseries Talayotic Menorca, entitled “The Age of the Talayots and the Legacy of the Slingers”, at the cultural centre housed in Tarragona’s former Town Hall. The session was introduced by cultural communicator Cecília Ligero, who provided historical context on the final phase of the Talayotic period. The documentary, produced by Empàtic Audiovisuals and IB3 Radiotelevisió, is available to watch on the IB3 website.

Menorca’s participation in the festival concluded with the presentation of the latest volume in the Sitjot collection, dedicated to the archaeological site of Son Catlar. Archaeologist and co-author Majo León, representing Proyecto Modular, presented the publication in the Camp de Mart Gardens. The event also featured the launch of a Talayotic-inspired craft beer, accompanied by a guided tasting led by master brewer Roger Vila from the Grahame Pearce brewery in Sant Climent.
