The international expert in islands and sustainable development played a key role in Menorca’s designation as a Biosphere Reserve and, more recently, in the Talayotic Menorca World Heritage candidacy
The Consell Insular de Menorca expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Cipriano Marín Cabrera and extends its support and sympathy to his family, friends and loved ones.
Cipriano Marín was the keynote speaker at the Sant Antoni institutional event in 2024, held in the Plenary Hall of the Consell Insular de Menorca. Under the title “Thirty years of Menorca as a UNESCO benchmark”, his lecture highlighted the island’s evolution and its prominent role in the field of international recognition, as well as the progress achieved in sustainability and heritage protection.
Throughout his professional career, Cipriano Marín maintained a close connection with Menorca and played a key role in some of its most significant milestones. In 1993, he was one of the coordinators of the dossier that led to Menorca being designated a Biosphere Reserve, and more recently he served as coordinator of the dossier for the Talayotic Menorca candidacy to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
A member of ICOMOS Spain and the Spanish Commission for UNESCO World Heritage, co-founder of the Institute for Responsible Tourism and one of the world’s leading experts in islands and sustainable development, Marín promoted numerous innovation projects linked to sustainable tourism and ecology. He also took part in the coordination or promotion of five biosphere reserves and contributed to more than fifty specialised publications as an author or co-author.
The Consell Insular de Menorca wishes to publicly acknowledge his valuable contribution to the island and its international standing, and to express its profound sorrow at his loss.
