Other: Talayot lighting ceremony for Human Rights

23 Jan

The institutional program of the Diada del Poble de Menorca 2021 includes the talayot lighting ceremony for Human Rights, which this year reaches its fifth edition. The Consell Insular de Menorca joined this initiative in 2019, with the collaboration of the Fons Menorquí de Cooperació, Amnesty International and Amics del Museu de Menorca. With this collective action, solidarity without borders and the cry for human dignity are vindicated in the context of a Mediterranean sea where thousands of people die trying to cross it in search of a better future. The lighting of fire-signals will take place in different talayots of Menorca, at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. In addition, this action also contributes to disseminating the Talayotic heritage of Menorca.

This act also reproduces what may have been the means of communication between Talayotic settlements during prehistoric times, in a period when the circulation of people around different areas of the Mediterranean was quite normal. The lighting of fire-signals will take place simultaneously in Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, the Greek island of Chios and in several parts of North Africa and Catalonia. The first lighting will be at 1 pm with smoke flares and will be accompanied by the reading of the manifesto by the Fons Menorquí de Cooperació and the interpretation of the Lluís Llach's song "Viatge a Ítaca". The second ignition will be at 6.30 pm with light flares.

You can participate in two different ways:
1. Light the fire-signals from the top of a talayot, individually or on behalf of an entity.
2. Attend the event: come and listen to the manifesto and the song and see the lighting of fire-signals in Torre d'en Galmés (Alaior).
