27 MarOn Saturday March 27th, the collective action “Lighting of the taulas, watch towers and talayots of the Mediterranean, a cry for human rights” will take place. The Consell Insular de Menorca is organising the event in conjunction with 22 different social actors, community organisations and cultural groups. 32 Minorcan talayots and watch towers will be lit
at 1pm with smoke signals and at 7pm with light flares.
The objective behind this action is two fold: to create awareness about the plight of people who live in situations grave enough to make them want to cross the Mediterranean in rafts in search of a better life; and in the frame of the Talayotic Menorca candidacy as a World Heritage Site, to
recreate what might have been the means of communication between talayotic settlements in prehistoric times, when movement across the Mediterranean was already commonplace.
The main event will take place at the Torre d'en Galmés (Alaior) settlement, where a manifesto will be read and a rendition of the song “Ítaca" played, while the rest of the talayots are also light. You may witness the lighting ceremony at Torre d'en Galmés (Alaior), Son Catlar (Ciutadella) and Talatí de Dalt (Maó). Capacity is limited and previous registration is required.
This action was originally programmed for January 9th as part of the Diada del Poble de Menorca (Minorcan Peoples Day) but was postponed due to bad weather and the current sanitary situation caused by Covid-19.
